We had a catch up with our friend Jonathan who has been a supporter of Grenson for a long time. We’ve always admired and followed his work and wonderful blog Garcon Jon; so thought we would take the opportunity to find out what he’s been up to and his favourite spots in his local area.
Your life in a nutshell and what are your latest projects?
I’m a Scottish photographer based in London, focusing on men in the modern world. Doing this job is like being given a passport into others lives. A stranger will instantly open up when I have a camera in my hand. Often I can be found shooting on the street as well as portraits for magazines like Vogue and Esquire.
What are you most proud of?
Personally, my growth over the past few years and my effort to be a supportive friend to my family of choice. Professionally, the book I’m currently working on. Watch this space for a release in 2019.
Where do you live and what do you love about it?
I live in South East London. I love my quiet road, the light in my apartment at sunset, the diversity of the city and the yoga studio down the road.
Can you give us 5 places we should visit where you live and why?
Greenwich Park for the view of the City
Deptford cinema for the community experience
The Full Nelson on Deptford Broadway for superb vegan bites
Gail’s Bakery from the best iced coffee in Blackheath
Deptford X for contemporary art
Sparrow in Lewisham for a mix of southeast Asian and European dishes
What 3 songs should we add to the Grenson Spotify playlist?
My top 5 this month are:
Lover, you should’ve come over by Jeff Buckley
Sober by Lorde
Drowned World/Substitute for Love by Madonna
Cold by Annie Lennox
Rhiannon by Fleetwood Mac
One book you think everyone should read?
One film everyone should see? Are you a stay at home Netflix person? Do you love the cinema?
It’s a wonderful life should be watched every year at Christmas time.
I love the movie-going experience but over the past few years there has been hardly any new movies worth seeing. On the other hand, so much incredible film content is being made for streaming.
What store should everyone visit and why?
If you’re not from London, getting lost in Liberty can be a magical experience. The textiles and homeware department are particularly special.
